HISTORY BY JS' DUKE3D BUILD SITE

February 07, 2002

FOREWARD: This long-winded blurb is to commemorate the past efforts of many folks
who once worked on the Critical Mass project.
This blurb is in no way intended to rain on Akimbo's parade. It is meant to clue whoever's
interested in a bit of history behind this map pak tc called, Extreme Justice.
At one time, there were many people working on an old project called Critical Mass
and some of their work has got into this release. We want to make sure that everyone
gets a mention because some of us still hurt when we think of this project that might
have got some notoriety.

Several months ago, let's say toward the end of 2001, Vincent Civiletti aka Akimbo
contacted me to tell me that he wanted to release his maps and use artwork
and cons created for an even older project that we once both worked on.
The truth is, the history behind " Extreme Justice " is really kind of interesting.

About 1997, several well-known Builders in the Duke3D community got
together to work on a project that later came to be known as " Critical Mass ".
Do any of you remember that old project? I wouldn't be surprised if a good number
of you reading this now, were once, at one time or another, part of this old,
very promising project. At that time, these maps would have been some of the very
best ever seen! Perhaps Akimbo's work will still impress you. I'm sure that they will.

But, as is the way with so many promising TC projects, past and present, they fall
to the weigh-side but this project has more twists and turns.
Critical Mass, at one time, had more than 15 people involved with mappers, con hackers,
musicians, artists, talented people that covered every aspect of developing a TC.

I cannot tell you how many people came and went. However, the Critical Mass project
wasn't finally laid to rest until February of 2001.

I took over the Critical Mass project as lead in the summer of 2000 but with one set back
after another, as was the way with this project all along, the remaining members
decided that we should call it quits. It was a very sad day indeed.

Well, without boring you with the details, suffice it to say that all that could be done
was done in order to revive the project. I'm still in contact with several of the members
and we still lament occasionally.

In the autumn of 2001, Akimbo contacted me and
said that he was interested in releasing the maps that he had constructed for this
project and I agreed to help in any way that I could. I am a busy man but I have
never allowed myself to truly forget this once, promising project. I had to help out.

Akimbo and I both agreed that we had to mention those people who worked hard on
the bits and pieces that we did manage to scrape together. To mention everyone that,
at one time or another worked on this project, would take more pages than you'd be
willing to read. But, nevertheless, we have to mention a few people.

Some things weren't conversions, so I don't have the
number for them, just the file name, which Tom
probably then changed.

Except for about 60(which I did), all the textures
were done before I joined, so it may have been Ben, or
even some artist before him. Ben rendered the clamour
sprites, then he sent them to me for cropping and
color fixing. - Ken Nign.

I don't know if the textures have the same tile number anymore but above is the list
that I received from Ken.

Ben Roffelsen - ARTIST ( CREATED THE MAIN CHARACTER IN THIS TC - CLAMOUR )

I am unsure if there's any art being unknowingly released that was created by this next
x-member but I have to mention him just in case. I don't want to leave anyone out.

Over the years there were more people that aren't mentioned here but most of them
never got anything handed in before they moved on so there's no point in even giving
them a blurb. Well, I have done my best to mention everyone who may or may not have
been involved in the final days of the Critical Mass Project.

NOTE: If I have forgotten anyone, it is because I do not have any documents with your name on it.
But please, don't be pissed and start screaming at me if you are not mentioned in this history blurb.

Thanks to everyone !!!

And, especially, thanks to 3D Realms for a great game we'll never forget!
Keep Duke ALIVE !
